Batie

Inspired by the historic Château de La Bâtie d’Urfé and the mythical grotte de rocailles, one of the last surviving artificial rock grottoes from the 16th century in France. Here, the walls and ceiling are layered with natural materials like colored sand and shells arranged into mythological scenes and patterns. The shells are juxtaposed with stones and colored sands which lend an organic, jewel‑like quality to the grotto which we sought to mimic in this mosaic. Using deep burgundy and coral honed marbles in the melon scheme, and soft blues and aqua in the bleu scheme to highlight this intricate shell motif.
